History:  Moscow was first mentioned by chroniclers in 1147. From the 15th Century until the beginning of the 18th century, it was the capital of the Russian State. Moscow was also the capital of the former Soviet Union and in 1991 became the capital of the Russian Federation.

Did you know? The more than 150 stations of the Moscow Metro were designed and embellished by prominent Russian architects, artists and sculptors, whose great talent and decorative skills created a peculiar underground network of great artistic value.  
Flag Description: Upon the break up of the Soviet Union, Russia reverted back to a flag first adopted in the 17th century by Peter the Great, who on a trip to Europe decided to adopt a variation on the flag of the Netherlands. Because of the influence of Russia in Europe, these colors have come to be referred to as Pan-Slavic colors.
