Good eye contact conveys confidence and trustworthiness, engages others, makes you more confident but just like many skills - it can be learned and improved. Here are a few tips:

-Maintain eye contact 2/3 of the time. Good eye contact is comfortable, attentive and balanced. Too much might appear as aggressive and might make some people uncomfortable. While listening maintaining eye contact shows that you are interested and paying attention.

-From time to time, look away to reflect on speakers message and demonstrate nonverbally that you are not only listening, you are also thinking about what is being said.

-When talking, the situation is a bit different. Use short pauses to create ease in the conversation so too much eye contact doesn't feel too aggressive.

-Look away to appear that you are moving to make a different point or collecting your thoughts.

-Keep in mind that in some cultures it's not as common to maintain direct eye contact during conversations.
