What Colors Should You Wear?

Different occasions require consideration for color choices. Here are a few tips:

  • I like to identify a color connection to the event – country’s flag color for a national holiday, company’s brand color for a corporate event, University color for graduation and etc.

  • Weddings - Pastel colors bring out the emotions in people. Lilac helps to provide a balance to the emotions. Mid-range colors such as lavender, viridian, cobalt-blue and coral-pink befit such an emotionally charged occasion.

  • Public Speaking - Aim for the colors to engage your audience, not distract it. Core colors such as maroon, navy blue and very deep purple give off a sense of authority.

  • Job interview – do your research. What is their corporate brand color? Does a person who will interview you have a “signature fashion item” (glasses, scarf, pearls and etc)? Try to establish “connection and sense of similarity.” The solidness of brown, maroon or navy blue are useful core colors in a suit. With the accent color of cream in a shirt or accessory, this will present an image of reliability and dependability. A combination of purple, pink and cream is suited for an interview in retail, sales and advertising work.
