Tips for Making a Flight Connection at Heathrow London Airport

One of the busiest, biggest and spread out airports offers many convenient connecting flights, but also presents its challenges. Here are a few of my personal tips as I am making connection between Chicago and Nice, France:
• Allow a lot of time! Unless you are flying cross-Atlantic on British Airways, making to Terminal 5 might take over an hour. Airport uses buses to transfer passengers and takes a very long time.
• Be extra attentive and remove all liquids out of the bag. I accidentally forgot to remove a bottle of perfume from duty free - it held me up for almost an hour at security as I was not the only passenger making that mistake.
• If you have water (especially hot water in thermos) make sure to drink or pour it out on the plane. Unlike some airports Heathrow does not offer sink/water fountain before security at Terminal 5. There was a couple of times I stood by security trying to drink very hot water that was left in my little thermos.
• British Airways Lounge at Terminal 5 is great - sit on a balcony overlooking planes coming in. Much more fresh air and less people. Coffee is pretty good too!
• And for a little treat check out Harrods Duty Free - cute souvenirs and delicious biscuits!
